and i'm not dead. i'm the one claiming the death benefits.

Generally death benefit from life insurance are tax free . And that is unless the Government has changed their ruling .You do not have to report it on your income tax filing .

Where did they come from? Are these death benefits really life insurance? Social security death benefit? What?

If the money derives from a Will from a deceased, you're subject to estate duties and not income tax.
