If calcium is placed in water, it will displace H2 from the water (slowly in cool water, faster in hot)
Ca + H2O yeilds Ca(OH)2 + H2
The resulting hydroxide can react with CO2 in the air to form CaCO3 (the carbonate)

When calcium reacts with water, the products are hydrogen gas and calcium hydroxide (I think)
Ca + 2(H2O) = H2 + Ca(OH)2 I suspect is the reaction equation.
I would really like some more info about the problem.
You don't want to pour water over calcium, since the reaction releases heat, and this would cause the water to boil (and when boiling water jumps, it is a bad thing) as opposed to adding calcium powder to water, where the water will dilute the heat. Then again, I'm not sure that the reaction is very strong, since calcium is in the second column instead of the first column.
In any case, in the end, the lab /is/ yours to write.

Ca + H2O = CaO + H2 (I'm assuming)
calcium + water = calcium oxide + hydrogen

sorry, i don't really know anything about that reaction, but i hope that using that information, you can get somewhere.
