I have a 1993 toyota camry that vibrates alot when I am at a stop light/sign. I took it to the dealership and the mechanic told me that the balance shaft inside the cam is damaged but I can put the car in neutral to stop the vibration. He also told me that I can go another 100,000miles like that. Is this true? I also called another toyota dealership and he said that it would cost a couple of thousands of dollars to repair and it is not worth it because my car is so old. He told me that my engine will go soon. Is this true? Both dealerships answers are conflicting. I am really trying to avoid a car payment.

there is no balance shaft inside the camshaft it is usually on the side of the engine being turned by the timing beltand may need to be retimed and the belt replaced. its a 250 dollar job just dont go to the dealer and always talk to them like you know what you are doing or you will get screwed.

It will certainly cost thousands as it requires the whole engine to be taken apart. The cam shaft is deep inside, and this should only be done by a qualified mechanic. Being that your car is old, and likely worth less than the repair you are making, the dealership is absolutely right. I dont know what the other guy is saying with 100k + unless your car has like 30k miles on it! The first mechanic is really trying to get some $$$ from you, I would just drive it as is and save the money you would spend on it for a new car when your car finally dies.

Sounds like some basic tuning and maintenance will take care of the problem. Poor running at idle and in gear probably means a good tune up and check/replace vacuum hoses. And by tune up I mean change the plug wires also.

Depending if your motor is 3.0DOHC it calls for 9.2 hours of labor if its a automatic trans. If its a 2.2 DOHC your looking at 6.5 hours of labor if it also has automatic trans. Plus the cost of the camshaft and rest of parts needed to do job.
