As a general rule, your doctor will check for dilation during a manual exam. He/she will open the vaginal canal with a speculum (as with any other exam), and with a gloved hand will manually feel the cervical neck to determine the extent of dilation. It's something that they learn to tell by feel, rather than by sight; some doctors keep a small three dimensional "chart" nearby for comparison that recreates the various stages of dilation in a plastic model or mold.

Your cervix is where you dialate and this pretty high up in your vagina. You may or may not be able to reach it on your own. To measure if you are dilating though the doctor will stick their fingers very far back in you and use their actual fingers to decide how many centimeters you are. For example, a fingertip is either considered 1cm or closed. Hope that helps.

that's particularly straight forward somewhat; one fingertip is approximately 1cm dilated, so on etc. that's a coarse estimate that's why that's going to alter from one individual to the subsequent. A nurse might are available in and consider, asserting the female is approximately 4cm and a doctor is available in 5 min later in straight forward terms to assert 3.5-4 or 5cm. anybody's palms and estimates are somewhat distinctive. they might permit you realize are 10 cm or complete while they might now no longer sense any cervix.

They use their fingers and see how much your cervix is opened and how thinned out it is. You doctor will explain what all they are doing when they are examining you. You still have a while before you start worrying about that though! Good Luck and Congrats!

They measure with their fingers. That's why if you see more than one doctor, you will get different measurements.
