My 11 month old is cutting teeth. She drools so much that I'm constantly changing her shirt. I put bibs on her, but she has them soaked within minutes. I was just wondering why they drool like they do while teething?

Babies drool in general because they are not coordinated enough to swallow the saliva they make constantly like adults do. When they're teething, they have a tendency to push their tongue against their gums to get relief from any pain, and that pushes the saliva forward even more than usual. Also, I'e heard that the saliva helps relax their gums, although I'm not sure how that works.

Why Do Babies Drool

Our baby, now 9 months, started drooling between 8-10 weeks, but his first teeth didn't come in until he was 5 months old! (That was a lot of drool!) Probably not a problem, but if it eats at you, maybe your pediatrician's office has an "ask a nurse" line you could call? Better to ask than let it get under your skin.

Babies drool because they lack the oral motor skills to keep drool in their mouth and because they generally don't feel the difference in being wet and being dry yet. Once they get to that point, they will be better able to keep the drool in. Teething makes it particularly hard, since they are in pain, and the pain makes them drool more.

My son was like that. Some of the drooling happens until they learn tongue control and to close their mouths. My son had enlarged adenoids also. We think his head congestion led him to breathe through his mouth alot. His adenoids have been removed but he still drools alot. The ENT said speech therapy can help with the tongue control and thus the drooling. My son is more than 2 and still not talking, (but lots of drooling!) so he will get speech therapy.

they drool because they are getting their teeth and they are not thinking about keeping the drool inside their mouth

The mouth is producing more drool then she can swallow. This is normal while teething.

There are some bigger bibs. Babies are born with all of their baby and adult teeth...that has to be tough. It's a phase, be patient.
