I cleaned it off last August, just before it went in for a full service. It was quite a mountain of bluey thin particle dust which covered one terminal entirely. I cleaned it off with hot water and a little metal brush, and then applied some battery terminal grease.

I looked again today and the dusty build up has built up again around one terminal... although its greasier this time cause of the grease.

Is this dusty stuff something to be concerned about ? Is it a sign that my battery is on the way out in near future ?

make a thin mixture of water and baking soda. use a small brush to apply the mixture to the terminals. let set for 2 or 3 mins. then rinse with water.
remove the battery cables, clean the battery posts and cables with a wire brush and reinstall. coat the battery terminals with a thick grease.

There are several was to clean the build up(corrosion) around your battery cables, the way you did it is fine or you can use Coca-Cola and the citric acid will eat the corrosion around terminals. Wal-Mart has a product called NCP-2 and you spray it on your post and cable clamps and this will prevent the corrosive build up. By the way no it does not necessarily mean your battery is on it's way out. But if you don't keep the corrosion off yes your battery life goes down quicker than if you kept the preventive applied.

I can't really explain why this happens on some cars more than other but the best thing that I have found to solve the problem are small anti corrosion discs they come in a set one is red for your positive terminal and one is green for negative you place them over your battery post underneath your terminals and you can pick them up for a buck or so at any local parts store

The real answer is... It is copper sulphate the result of battery acid acting on the copper wire and cable end. It is a sign that battery acid is leaking out the terminal of the battery. It will gradually ruin the cable and the correct fix is to replace the battery and if necessary the affected cable. If you do not do this fix, do not complain when you have starting or charging problems.

No, I think your battery is fine. I think it happens to most car batteries.

I usually sprinkle bicarb on the terminal and then wait a bit before putting water on it. That usually gets it off.

Also, you don't have to use battery terminal grease, I just spread vaseline on it. Works just as well.
