KMnO4 changes its oxidation state. and within this equation, is an oxidation reduction, or a redox reaction. all i know is that the oxidation states of the elements change. the equation is:

The two half reactions are:
MnO4- + 5e- + 8 H+ --> Mn2+ + 4 H2O
HSO3- + H2O --> SO42- + 2 e- + 3 H+

to balance the electrons the upper equation needs X2 and the lower equation needs X5 (ten electrons on both sides.

Deleting the excess H+ and H2O gives:

2 MnO4- + 5 HSO3- + H+ --> 2 Mn2+ + 5 SO42- + 3 H2O
