Here's some notes I made years ago:

-- Ancient Constellation. Mentioned by Homer and Hesiod, but originated with the Sumerians. They saw it as Gilgamesh.

-- Sumerians called it URU AN-NA, "light of Heaven"; that's where the name "Orion" originiates.

Orion was the son of Poseidon. Homer (in Odyssey) describes Orion as a hunter with a club of bronze, chasing after Lepus the hare, and accompanied by his two dogs.

One myth has him chasing after the seven sisters, the Pleiades. Zeus protected them by placing them in the sky.

Another myth has him punished for courting the daughter of King Oenopion of Chios. The King has him blinded. But an oracle tells Orion that the rising sun would restore his sight, so he sets off toward the east and gets fixed.

The story of his death varies, but involves a scorpion. One version says he was bragging that he was the greatest of all hunters. In retribution for his hubris, the Earth let loose a deadly scorpion that killed him (in Eratosthenes and Hyginus).

Another version has him trying to force himself on Artemis (the great female hunter goddess), and she sets the scorpion on him (see Aratus). Still another has him heroically defending Leto -- mother of Artemis -- from the Scorpion (see Ovid). Yet another version told by Hyginus has Artemus and Orion as great lovers. Artemus's twin brother Apollo doesn't like it; he tricks her into shooting him. Grieving at her mistake, she lifts him into the heavens.
