zip the files first, depending on what type they are, they may compress significantly.

Since a standard DVD will only hold 4.7G, unless you're using double sided, the only possible way is to use compression. There are several compression utilities; 7-zip, winzip, gzip, bzip, lzw, rar (which is a licensed algorithm).
For more info see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_compression

Also using tar in doing data backup allows you to keep directory structure, file permissions and ownership data from the filesystem to be restored from the archive.
Though even with compression you will be pressed to fit it all on just 1 or 2 DVD's unless most of that data is text/doc files. Executable files do not compress by much as they are already quite compacted in the compiling process.

You can attempt to compress the files as many times as you want and you're not going to fit 30 gigs on 2 DVD+R's. Blu-ray discs are capable of holding that amount of data in one disc but they obviously don't make burnable Blu-ray's yet.

I'd recommend a cheap pack of 20 or so at Best Buy for like $25 or $30.. gives you some extra just incase the burns don't go right for whatever reason. Enjoy.

A DVD+R will store 4.7 GB, so you'd need at least 7 disks. I don't know how you could make all that fit on 1 or 2, but they are really cheap to buy.

Do not back up system files and programs. If you only backup the data files you will have plent of room.

yeah, you can't do that. you may be able to compress it down to around 26-28GB DEPENDING on what types of files you have, but you're looking at 6 or 7 dvds
