A fat quarter is quarter yard of fabric cut with the dimensions of 18" x 22" rather than 9" x 44". Basically, a half yard of fabric cut in half to produce a more square piece of fabric. Many quilters feel that a fat quarter cut gives them more option than a tradition quarter yard cut of fabric.

The standard fat quarters I buy are usually 18"x 22". I love them because I can get varied fabric patterns for my doll clothes cheaply, and I don't end up with a ton of remnants that I rat-pack. They are also good for patchwork piecing projects.

Fat quarters are the most common way to buy your quilting material. Every shop seems to have different dimensions for their fat quarters, however they are all around 20"x20" within varing degrees (eg. 18"x21" or 19"x21")

hope this helps!
