were the Crusaders worthwhile.. ?

No they were not worthwhile because they killed many innocent people. And the Europeans didn't even win! They cause destruction and devastation in the Holy Land and caused debt in Europe. In my opinion they were a waste of time, money, and effort. Most think they went in order to save people and convert them to Christians, but it was a matter of land control and money.

Yes to some degree it stopped Muslim aggression into Europe. Christians where not the cause it they acting in self defense. The Pope initially sent the Crusaders to help the Christians of Byzantine(Turkey) who where severely persecuted by Muslims and regain Christian and Jewish lands and holy sites seized by the Muslims.

Some say it was a ruse of the church to have some peace in europe by sending the belliquous people far away. The church then could expand its power in europe. That's the only positive I can think of it (the part about peace in europe, not the part about the church comingto power).
