93,000,000 Miles from the earth to the sun. This distance is known as an astronomical unit.

The Sun has an average distance from Earth of 92,956,000 miles which is also known as an Astronomical Unit or AU.

The Earth is farthest from the sun at Aphelion at 94,509,000 miles and closest to the sun at Perihelion 91,403,000 miles. This is due to the elliptical orbit of the Earth around the Sun.

Oddly enough, the Earth is farthest from the Sun during the Northern Hemisphere's summer and closest during the winter.

The Sun is 93,000,000 miles from the Earth "on average."
Our orbit around the Sun is not a perfect circle, so sometimes we are a bit closer to the Sun, and sometimes we are farther away than that. Our orbit around the Sun is a kind of elipse. If you are not familiar with that word, it means sort of a squashed circle which is not perfectly round.

Astronomers like to use simple numbers when doing math and comparisons between things far away. So, they often make comparisons between the distance from Earth to somewhere far away as being 12 times the distance from Sun to Earth, etc., etc. And, they refer to the distance from the Sun to the Earth as one Astronomical Unit, or one AU, which is 93,000,000 Miles. In another manner, they talk of the time it takes for light to travel so far from here to there in AU also.
light takes about 8 seconds to travel from the Sun to the Earth. So, light taking 50 AU to reach Earth came from a source 50 x 93,000,000 Miles away, for example, and the trip from the source took 400 seconds or 6 2/3 minutes.
