Which does what?? do you have to have both?

Rhythm guitarists usually provide additional rhythm (adding to the drums and bass) to a song, while a lead guitarist provides melody.

You don't necessarily have to have both in a band. Sometimes, in a recording, the guitarist will play a rhythm part, and then overdub that with a lead part. In a trio with one guitarist, the guitarist is simply the guitarist.

Rhythm guitarist plays chords and lead guitarist plays melodic solos, not just chords. I guess it depends what kind of band you're in whether or not you need to do both.

Rhythm guitar fills out the whole sound of the song. Lead guitar is prominent in soloing.
There are not requirements for either or both. But a song sounds better with both, especially if the song is guitar-oriented.
