I don't have an answer as to why. I had mine done at 19. My reason-because I wanted too. As for the pain. I think biting my tongue hurt more than the piercing. The only part that hurt for me was when they slip the post in, after they poke the needle through. I did have a Slurpee waiting for me afterwords, because I wasn't sure what to expect. So, i don't think it is the actual piercing that is the problem. It is afterwords-from 2 days to a week. Your tongue will be swollen and it will make it difficult to talk and eat some stuff. I recommend that you avoid hoagies, spaghetti, and oral sex for a few weeks. Good luck, and enjoy.

I've had my tongue peirced for almost a year and when people ask why, I usually respond with a coy "do you really want to know?" But that isn't too appropriate at 16. So, why do you want one? Looks, to have something to play with, etc?
Yes, it hurts. The actual peircing doesn't hurt much more than ears, but the recovery is awful. I couldn't chew for a week, and my tongue was so swollen it was hard to talk. Also, I have on occasion bitten the metal ball on the end of the bar and that doesn't feel good.
I like having one, and I like it alot more knowing that I can take it out at anytime and the hole will heal and that will be that.

Why? Because you think it's cute. They don't, but you do. Thank you very much! I have my tongue pierced, and I have to tell you, it doesn't hurt at all. Biting your tongue hurts more. I didn't feel a thing, only the blood coming out and that didn't hurt. I changed the ring two days later, It got a little swollen, but that was it, just take care of it.

After you get it done, don't eat chewy or hot foods.
Eat baby food, jello, pudding, popcicles, ice cream, juice..etc. I call it the baby food diet, cause you will lose weight along with it.

I personally wouldn't recommend it, I knew a guy once who had it done his tongue swelled up he couldn't eat and yucky stuff oozed. He didn't last a week he took it out himself . ah he had to eat mushy foods like baby food.
