Hi there. Dig up the soil and turn it with a shovel or tiller, remove rocks, grass, and weeds. Most veggies do well with lots of sun like on the south direction. Work in sterile steer manure or compost about 4-5 inches into your soil. Organic matter really makes a big difference. Plant seeds as directed on the package and keep the soil moist until they germinate usually 5-10 days. Thin out the plants when 2 -4 leaves are present to space the plants as directed. Most plants need soil that drains well. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Watering will depend on where you live and the annual rainfall. Keep weeds and pests controlled. Weed killers may kill the plants also, so pull them out instead. Many plants produce flowers that bees and other insects will pollinate to produce the veggie (many are technically fruits). Fertilize during this period as directed on the container. There are many products to choose from. In 60-78 days, you should get great results.http://www.ehow.com/how_110539_start-vegetable-garden.html This site may get you started. Good luck and have fun.

Ah the joys of small gardens. Hint: Read the back of the seed packet for starters. Take each step a bit at a time. My first garden was a 10 x 30.

Pre-starting seeds for some plants will help like tomatoes. Some seeds you don't pre-start like corn.
If you really want to; start small not like i did and tried to fit a grocery store in a small space. I recommend 3 different vegetables. You can add more in the future after determining amount of space left. Alternate what you grow every year. See if you have a "green thumb". It gives you the time to watch how the garden grows and your not too busy trying to solve problems that may occur with a variety of veggies.

Break the ground with either a roto-tiller or spade fork. You have to go at least the length of the blades on a spade fork or 8 inches. Whatever comes first. This is a good time to add rotted manure for fertilizing. Let it set for 2 weeks and til the soil again with the rotted manure thats been there for 2 weeks. Let it set for 2 weeks and do a soil sample test. Kits can be found at Walmart/Home depot. Fertilize/adjust ph level according to what your test kit results are. Then begin planting and once again read the back of seed packet for spacing .Plant after the last frost of spring. Watering takes place when it rains. When the top of the soil looks dry.....water it. Use a large spray head. Not the squeeze trigger.....one with a valve on it. Pick your fruits when ripe or falling off. Squash/zucchini....pick them when small about a foot long. Picking lets the others that are growing receive more nutrients for growth.

I put a "by state" hardiness zone map and a gardening site for you.
There are more things to mention but like I said start small grow big.

Your best resource for this information will be a nursery or garden center nearby. They will know the varieties of plants, times for planting, and climate, particular qualities of the soil in your area. Some vegetables are better planted from seedlings than seed, for instance, and some need special considerations if they're to be grown in a specific climate. Check with a reputable garden center near your home.

The back of your package of seeds may hold a clue for you. Some companies will say what kind of soil is recommended. They certainly give guidelines for sun and water.

Call your local garden center and ask about the soil in your area - whether it is too acidic or basic... whether it's heavy clay that will need topsoil tilled in, or drainage problems, etc.
Ask about veggie fertilizers. some specialized versions are really worth the money. Ask also about natural insect repellents. You don't want to poison yourself eating veggies sprayed with chemical insecticides.

Remember - nightshade veggies don't really like to share territory - so ask about distance between veggies.

I LOVE growing my own vegetables. It's SO rewarding! Enjoy.

You could try www.burpee.com - I buy a lot of Burpee seeds and they have an interactive area where you can ask questions. Probably any other big seed company (Park's Seed, Jung, eg) would also give some help.
