Karl Marx wrote "Das Kapital" and (with Friedrich Engel) wrote "The Communist Manifesto".

Adam Smith wrote "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations."

Like the folks who answered before me, Karl Marx was the "father of communism" and Adam Smith is famous for his capitalistic theories. They are at the opposite ends of economic theory on individual choice and freedoms. Adam Smith was in favor of a limited role for government.
