Here's the premise: The basic diffference between conservative and liberal thought today is that conservatives would like to maintain a status quo, or certain standards to uphold (in spite of not always doing it). Liberals would like to have standards be relative (as in, it's ok for you but not for me), or non-existent (standards? who needs them?).

Do you agree with my premise?

Is it good or bad to have standards? Shouldn't politicians on both sides be held to standards?

Lets see, your premise is that conservatives are for preservation of standards and liberals are selfish or narcissists. No, I disagree.

It's not about standards, its about accomplishing goals for the good of the country. The disagreement is how they're to be accomplished. Why is it that these sorts of questions are always posed in a good versus evil sort of context. Thats what leads to the sort of rancor that has been prevaled for much too long.

It would help if everyone actually understood the pertinent questions, and quit disguising them .

Most folks have standards about things they feel are important or relavent to their lives. This is true regardless of party affiliation , liberal , conservative, or whatever other label is applied to a person. I guess that means I disagree w you on this premise.

The key to standards when it pertains to our government or it's policies & programs, is the difficulty reaching compromise on what standards are "best" & most appropriate.

Cons & libs may agree a program is needed, but differ on what or who the program should apply to based upon their own personal standards. An additional problem is the challenge of upholding standards in a consistent manner.

My standard for what I wear are far different from my 21 year old son. That doesn't make him wrong, any more than it makes me right

As a liberal, I for one believe in trying to maintain high standards. Especially, in our education system. We cannot be the mediocre. We have to excel. Now, for stating that conservatives try to maintain high standards doesn't make sense to me since they elected Bush in office. He is the lowest form of what is standard in America.

Politicians align themselves to Political Parties due to their personal standards. They wouldn't be where they were if they didn't.

Its like saying "should we hold water accountable for being wet?" It wouldn't be water if it wasn't wet...if that makes sense?

How about this standard: "My war should be legal".

Conservatives are more guilty of moral relativism than anyone else. I don't know why they fail to recognize this. Except they are also more guilty of ignoring facts that disturb their world view than anyone else.
