We should:
The government has an obligation to provide assistance to those in need, particularly children who have no control over their life circumstances.
We should not:
The government should not redistribute wealth; to do so encourages people not to provide for themselves and perpetuates the cycle of poverty.

I think that there is still a need, but there is just as big of a need to make the system work better. I think in Minnesota, the governor that used to be a wrestler, Jesse Ventura (I think it was him) ended their welfare program effectively. From what I heard, he made every capable person that wanted welfare work for the gvt, things like picking up garbage off the highway. That was major incentive for them to get jobs and get off welfare.
I think that is a great idea!! Too many people are just allowed to be lazy with the current system. There IS true need, and I'm all for helping those people, but for those who are capable of working, they need to be working.

I don't see how you can't have welfare. What I do think is that those who are able to, should have to work for that welfare. Perhaps community based type of work to build up the self esteem & the will to work. No work, no money.

I would say no. That should be left up to churches and charities.
One thing we need to do is throw out illegal aliens, get rid of guest worker programs, and give those jobs to American citizens. There's nothing an American won't do if the pay is right.

As a nation, especially as one of the richest in the world, we have a responsibility to care for those in need.
