Hi Ed,

I think you would be cheaper just buying a DVR. If you already have direct TV they won't give you any special deals.

If it was me I would add my own DVR. My preference is TiVO but they do come with a monthly fee.

If you are interested in TiVO you can learn a lot about them here on the TiVO site - https://www3.tivo.com/tivo-tco/index.do

And here on the TiVO forums - http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/index.php?s=4991dda17837c7fefd21443d75d5b968

The TiVO store sometimes has some specials - http://store.tivocommunity.com/merchant.mvc?

First of all, DirecTV no longer sells receivers. You lease them. To get the DirecTV DVR Plus, for existing customers it costs $99. You can usually use your existing dish. It doesn't matter since they'll send out an installer who will replace your dish if it is really old and not the newer triple LNB or more and will throw in a multiswitch if needed since the DVR's require two coax feeds in order to record a different show at the same time. The fee for having the DVR is $6/mo which is cheaper than Tivo. New customers get the DVR for free after rebate. If you've been with DirecTV for awhile, I'd call and complain. Tell them Dish Network wants to give you a free DVR and you're interested in cancelling. Sound serious and get them to transfer you to the retentions department. They'll strike up a deal with you and you can get a $100 credit on your account to get the DVR for free. You can probably convince them to throw in some movie channels for free for a few months too. If you don't like playing smooth talker, the worst you'd have to do is shell out $100 for the DVR and that's cheaper than Tivo for both the monthly and the equipment (their 80 hour recorder costs the same as DirecTV's 100 hour recorder!) plus since it's DirecTV equipment you can watch something different at the same time without having to have another receiver just for your Tivo (which would cost you another $6/mo on top of the $16/mo Tivo charges you!).
