How do they determine how many stars a movie gets?

its just the critics deciding whether or not they think it is a good movie. they use a simple 5 star system so that every one can understand it. i do not personally put much stock in movie critics but the system is still there. ebert and roper use the thumbs up or thumbs down system but it is all the same.
