It can vary among each colleges and universities. Very likely you might have some general or basic requirement of taking a semester or two of each areas like math, science, arts, social studies, english, etc... whether you like it or not. Beyond that, there's also further course requirements more specific for your major.

If you're a freshman-to-be, you'll be invited to a summer orientation at that school where they'll assign you an advisor. He/she can help you with choosing your courses then.

Depends entirely on your major, but here are a few:

English - whatever your college labels it, it's generally how to write a sentance, how to write a paragraph, and how to write a paper

Math - How to do it, how to analyze it and how to appreciate it

Social Sciences - How we interact with each other, how we used to interact with each other, and how we can interact with each other better in the future

Viewing a Wider World - Something that has absolutely nothing to do with what you are most interested in studying so the college can say that it broadened your horizons

The other Sciences - Ya got your choice between physical sciences, computer science, biology, chemistry but ya got to expose yourself to one or two of them.

History - Might be the history of your state, our country, or the world, but you got to get at least a taste before you waltz out with whatever's left of your cap in your hand

Fine Arts - Either do 'em or appreciate them, but it's usually easier to do them. Less memorization

Hope this helps.

I am not really sure. I think it really depends on the college and your major. Try going to to different college websites and they may give you an idea of what classes are essential for different majors or all majors.

Good Luck, I hope I helped.
