I will believe that's based on how comfortable of a friendship that you two have. Do you think he may feel the same way about you? Of course you knows he cares about you because you two are friends, but what about the other way around?
That is healthy that you talk with him everyday so you should know his likes and dislikes. And what he finds attractive besides the obvious in a lady; her appearance.
I believe if he's your friend that you shouldn't tell him if you do not want to settle down and be serious with what you want and expect. Sometimes begin with years and years of friendship, but the reason it ends because either one or both partners may feel that they know one another enough not do the things that first attacted the two to one another. And then not only is the boyfriend /girlfriend thing over; your friendship may never be again; depending on the ending of the relationship.
Again, if you two have a friendship where you can see that he may feel the same way then you do; then you can express your feelings; but not too overtly that you make a fool out of yourself. Do it so that you can also get an answer from him right then and there. But if you too have never spoke of feelings for each other on different levels before and you never saw him connect to you in the same way then I suggest you wait and feel him out. Give him some hypothicals; you two are friends you can tell him you were watching Tyra or something other but, it had to do with a show that was dealing with friends falling for one another. And one friend just embarrassed the other friend (put it has the girl hurting the guy feelngs on the show, if you say it was a woman not too much pity will fall in. Men stick with each other). Then ask him you want to know how he felt about that; because you wondered about it. And make sure you laugh it off as you telling him this. You don't want to come off too serious; but get him to answer. I promise it will work if you play the cards right.
Peace and Blessings...

I agree, but I think you have to do it the right way.. I was in the same situation and didn't want to ruin a perfect friendship either.

We were getting something to eat, I had been freaking out about a final.. he was calming me down, reassuring me that I knew th material, blah, blah, blah.. everything that he has always done....we started to leave....in the parking lot I said that I was lucky. He asked me why.. I told him, not everybody had a best friend that they loved too. He kissed me. We went on a real date that night, not a "friends getting together date". May 6th will be our 34th anniversary.
