If it is strictly for school work go with basic.

If you want to enjoy great ease with multimedia go with Premium. It includes the "Media Center" program which I personally have found indispensable in my home.

You should get Vista home basic for basic stuff, but get Windowsw Vista Home premium for media such as media center, and the new windows Aero, which is so cool, I would recommend to get a tablet PC, with Home Premium, to store class notes, study, and write on the screen, its very cool

home basic is not suggested for laptop use regarding to the specs of windows vista. so choose premium

The one you can best afford that suits your own requirements. Don't forget that with Microsoft Windows you have to get a lot of 3rd party tools to hold it together (like anti-spyware, anti-virus, regular defragsm registry fixers, etc). Also remember that "Vista" isn't the only OS. You can also get Mac OSX and Linux laptops that are virus free and don't require excessive regular maintenance.

Premium, it is better for entertainment, gaming, playing music, dvd's etc. Basic is pretty limited in its features.
