For you BBCophobes, the poll was conducted by the University of Maryland.

Yes, Sgt, I'm sure there is a correlation between having an "ineffective" military and not being hated. Those Nazis were so "effective"...

I find it quiet interseting. Japan proably becouse they can't even have a standing army, makes sense. And then France has always had the reputation of not doing very much and staying extremly nutruel in most matter. For the longest time Canada was known only as a peace keeping nation, which has change somewhat in recent years.

An then on the other side you see three country in almost constant conflicit of one kind or another.

I might not agree completly but i can see why a poll would come up with those results.

I guessed you missed the commentary on that poll which, to sum up, basically said Canada ranked so high because it doesn't measure a blip on most people's radar. They chose Canada because of what they think they know, not what they actually do, and the US, Israel and Iran get bad ratings because they are always in the news and under scrutiny.

As for biggest threats to world peace, North Korea and China don't get bad ratings in the Middle East, which basivally rates everyone bad (including Canada) and can throw the results off.

So yes, it is nice to be number 1, but it would be better if Canada actually mattered on the international community.

Which of these has 25 million people who have forced their way in illegally to take advantage of its opportunities? For a country that everyone supposedly hates, the US seems to attract a lot more people who want to live there.

Which country had a population that wandered off in the middle of summer and abandoned 14,000 elderly citizens to die of heat stroke? (Hint: Think frogs.) Yeah, nice place to live.

Oh, and Mr. LFP, you might want to read your own links when you're not stoned. It was a "BBC World Service" poll conducted by an international company based in Europe; the US portion was conducted with the help of an agency based at (but essentially autonomous from) the University of Maryland. It was not "by the University of Maryland" as you claim.

Result debatable but very logical :

1- Canada : American dream without Bush.

2- Japan : Pacific country, long life, good health, the geishas and Totoro.

3- France : Culture, way of life, Audrey Tautou, and Chirac's "Non" to Iraq war.

Japan is no threat because they are barred within their Constitution from attacking another country. So, no surprises here.

France is not a surprise because they are a few years from imploding. Remember the riots? The French military history of late is, quite honestly, non-existent.

Canada is intriguing. They do play along in multi-national efforts most of the time. Too damn cold for me, though.

Noticed that those countries have an ineffective military. Could there be a correlation.

That's why the world fears us and Iran.

Well if you think it's true (anyone) then move to any of the three. Me I think I'll just stay right here in America, truly the greatest country in the world.

OK....so what is your point?

There are many things in the USA I would change if I could. However I am proud we are not France or Japan or the EU!
