Not including humans. (I'm also wondering if there is evidence for whales being of high intelligence)

Everyone else has mentioned primates, whales, elephants etc, but I just wanted to stand up for the octopus. It has been put through a series of intelligence tests and scores very highly in many of them and is much better at solving some logic problems than several mammals. Like mammals it has a very large brain and is a skilled hunter. For this reason it is the only invertebrate that is protected by the same laws on animal experimentation that vertebrates are. It also featured some time ago in its own David Attenborough programme demonstrating its exceptional abilities.

Survival and intelligence are not one in the same. For example, alligators were here when the dinosaurs were and have evolved to were they only need to eat once a year and can lay around the rest of the time. Sounds pretty smart to me.

So if you want to talk in terms of survival, it makes no sense to be smart if you cannot live through an ice age or natural disaster.

Chimpanzees, bonobos and gorillas might be the top three, probably followed by orangutans and gibbons or possibly some kinds of dolphins. Certainly the most intelligent groups of animals besides humans are apes and cetaceans, although elephants are also very smart.

The top 5 are all from the ape family. A bit of trivia - the Pig is 10th
