I dont think the scent is whats harmful. Candles put off a by-product from the wax that gets EVERYWHERE. Over time of you can actually see black powder substance on picture frames, ceiling fans, air ducts and just about everywhere else. Dont know if this causes SIDS, but your baby is breathing that crap..

It's not the scent. There are certain candle wicks that have metal in them, and this can put out toxins into the air. Usually the bad ones put off black smoke while they are burning. Even if it's not the bad ones, try not to burn candles in the same room as your baby, some candles are pretty strong and babies don't need to be inhaling anything besides oxygen.

I have not heard of a candle causing SIDS, what I have heard is that there are certain candles (manly candles manufactured in China) that put lead into the wick so when you burn them the lead goes into the air and gets breathed in. The best thing to do is look at the bottom of the candle to see what the ingredients are. From what I understand, if the candle is manufactured in the United States, there is no lead in the wick.

i can tell you with certainty that candle burning is terrible for you and your baby the black smoke that rises from the candle is going into the baby's lungs its worse than second hand cigarette smoke... and if you smoke or have candle smoke around your baby it can give them phenomena (i found out the hard way) bees wax candles don't give off the same toxic chemicals and smoke so if you must that is safer
healthy babies are happy babies

Perfumes, "air fresheners", and cleansers all contain volitile organic compounds (VOC). Many of these are irritating to the lungs, which is of course linked to SIDS.

These are the reason that indoor air is by far more polluted than outdoor air. If you wish to use candles stick to plain beeswax, with no added scents or dyes.

I lit candles when nursing at night (on nights when I wasn't to tired to put out the energy, lol) she is fine. I would be more worried about the dust in the ducts and vents in the house and stores.. .that is terrible and brings on so many 'mysertry' allergies

I don't think the smell would hurt babies. Just make sure that if your baby can crawl that the candle is out of reach!

As a mother of a child that died of SIDS, I can tell you that it is NOT linked to SIDS. Other than that, I agree with the other posts about the toxins, metals, etc. being released into the air.
