When I was in Iraq during the Gulf War, the Canadian Air Force was right next to us. When was the last time you heard of the Mexican military doing anything? I know Canadians that have moved to America. They did the paperwork, became citizens, learned the language, and got jobs. I think we all know about the problem with Mexicans moving to America. If anything, we're an annoyance to them. When the going gets tough, the draft dodgers move to Canada. Why does everyone hate Canada? Give me real reasons, not just "Canada Sucks."

When I said that Canadians learn English, I really meant that they speak English, which yes, they already knew. I just put that in there to contrast with the Mexicans not speaking English.

I was born in canada. I love canadians and I love canada. Canadians are the most nicest people I have ever met. I lived in america for 32 years and I find most americans rude as hell. I love CANADA and once I get my Ph.D here I am moving back!! I still have a Canadian patch I ordered off ebay and I sewed it on my backpack. I think Americans hate canadians because we are considerate and nice. I noticed here in America, if you are a jerk and rude then you will get respect. If you are nice then you will get walked all over. This is why people hate canadians because we are better than they are in manners, social skills, environmental factors, economy, and taking care of our citizens.

From what I get from travelling and family in the US, their are two things that cause this perceived 'hate' of Canada.

First is ignorance of the common American. Most Americans do not know that Canada has troops fighting on the ground in Afghanistan right now as part of the NATO/UN mission. This is because Canada is barely a blip on the US national media radar, unlike in Canada where we have US news coming at as 24/7. Also, there is a lot of ignorance about Canada in general in the US. Yes, I've been asked if I live in an igloo (generic answer - only in the winter, I live in the mansion in the summer) and if Calgary was bigger then 60,000 people (try over a million). A little knowledge about Canada would help a lot.

Secondly, there was hatred over Canada's lack of support of the Iraq invasion as well as the missle defence plan. From what I can tell it was not the actual stepping away, but how it was done. In the case of the Iraq war, Canada didn't have the troops to send, but instead of offering other types of support (humanitarian, supplies....or even moral), we said no and then continued to thumb our noses at the US while their sons and daughters died. As for missle defence, this was so poorly handled that the Prime Minister said in a meeting with Bush that Canada was in, and then a day later announced we were out. It was like another slap in the face to the US as we jumped in and out of the program and then completely out after telling the President we were in. Basically, on both cases, it was horrible diplomacy by the Canadian federal government.

I am a Canadian, lived in Canada my whole life until I moved to America for one year... I moved to southern Ohio(and back to Canada) and the answer to your question is ignorance, Americans have lots of misconception and blind ignorance that contribute to hate. I got asked some of the most ridiculous questions, some of which were poor attempts at humor other questions were out of stupidity. "is there Christmas in Canada?", "Is there black people in Canada?" yes I was legitimately asked those questions(those weren't jokes). Americans(most) don't hate Canada, they are just trying to exert some sort of superiority BS. Actually a lot of people said they would want to move to Canada. (some said that because Obama won the elections, again more ignorance . they were right wing radicals and didnt even know about Canada's government) Canada and America have a similar start but different upbringings. The laws differ only slightly, and Canadians have a different Government type with a much different agenda. As a personal point, there is no point for Americans to hate Canada. Canada and America are like brothers. Canadians and Americans enjoy one of the biggest borders in the world with lax restrictions on travel. America and Canada have huge trade in between each country and both countries rely on each other for economic benefit. If everyone else in the world dropped support for the USA Canada would still support America... At least in a economic way. I can say with out doubt that Canada has had a important impact on America ever since independence to today. Oh, and the things being cheaper in America are for a few reasons. Ever notice that cost of living here is quite higher? our minimum wage is much higher, in Ohio it was around 6-7$ and the last time i heard Ontario minimum wage is around 10$. And not everything in the states is cheaper, I hear beef has a similar price, as long with bottled water, coffee ,stuff like that. booze is more expensive in Canada due to Sin tax, same goes with tobacco.

To answer your question, the strongest anti-Canadian Vibe I get are from those who are angered with Canada for not sending troops to Iraq, while minimizing Canada's efforts in Afghanistan. There is also some resentment over Canada's refusal to go along with Bushes "Star Wars" Plan.

There have also been a handful of outspoken persons both in the media and in the Parliamentary house that have openly questioned Bushes, motives for war, handling of information, and intelligence.

All of these instances combined have made Canada a few enemies. However Canada it a sovereign nation, privy to it's own policies and decisions. Although Canada and the USA are phenomenal allies with regards to industry and relief they do not see eye to eye on every issue. Canada not wanting to send troops to Iraq reflects Canada's long standing dedication to diplomacy. Canada is unwilling to participate in a war that is not sanctioned by the UN. Canada is also unwilling to violate the peace and human rights treaties they have historically signed onto.

One of the great things about Canada is that immigrants to Canada can keep their cultural and national identities. The terrorist vermin of the world are starting to fix their eyes on Canada as a target because of Canadian role in Afghanistan. Stephen Harper is a good prime minister. As for the Mexican military, remember that Mexico tried to bring aid to the USA after Hurricane Katrina; very admirable gesture.

Well Canada proved to the world that socialized medicine works and other social programs are beneficial to the population. The capitalist states like the USA hates for it's citizens to know that socialism and democracy works as long as the government is not corrupt. Also Canada does not bow to the USA. talking to people from Canada it seem they have just as much freedom as us if not more. That's the only reasons I truly know that the people of America hate Canada.
The Mexican well they are coming to the USA at an alarming rate, there government does not help them. Truly the Tyranny government of Mexico are the most corrupt and the companies that hirer them are abusing them and insulting the worker of the USA, by not have them pay taxes and giving them no benefits so I would say this is a type of slavery. I have nothing against them coming to the USA but legally so they will have rights and not have to hide.

I don't really hate Canada, per say, but they are a bunch of benevolent terrorists. Living in Michigan, I am plagued with dealing with Canadian currency, specifically coins. I cannot count the number of times I have been to a laundry mat with just enough change to do my laundry only to find that one of the quarters is Canadian and will not be accepted in the dryer. Or going to a soda machine w/ exact change and being jipped again because of the Canadians. In addition to this you have so kindly given us Celine Dion and Rush.

BTW- There are many Mexicans that have gone through all the paperwork as well to enter this country. The biggest problem people in this nation have with Mexicans coming here is the loss of jobs. Do you think that the people whom believe that Mexicans are stealing all the jobs feel better about our neighbors to the north doing it. This opinion, I will note, is not mine but is still strongly held by many others here.

Oh yeah, Canada is just America Junior, too.

"I know Canadians that have moved to America. They did the paperwork, became citizens, learned the language, and got jobs"

as a Canadian, I'm slightly offended that you don't know we speak the same language.

Actually, Canada is generally well liked throughout the world. Thats why many people (including Americans) put Canadian flags on their bags when travelling in Europe.

I don't hate Canada at all. My husband keeps telling me how great the fishing is and that the people are really pretty nice. Hopefully we'll make a trip next year and I can find out for myself.
