i am getting a german shepherd pupppy in about 11 days and we have a 20-20 fenced in lot. i would really like for grass to be up there instead of all the nasty leaves and mud. because it would jsut be better for the dog. and my mother says it wont work if i clear out the leaves and try to but fertilizer and grass growing stuff... becuase there is no sunlight up there to help it grow (the lot is in between a lot of trees)! is she right or is there some way i could get grass to grow????

We have an area in our back yard against the house with the same issues.. We have 3 dogs though.. So its tough to keep the grass growing as they do wear it down. I use Straw, not Hay to lay down and soak up the mud , it helps keep the dogs feet somewhat clean so I don't have to wipe their feet as much as. Anyways about the shaded area.. Yes, put alot of grass seed under the hay, but make sure the ground is not mud, and then take a hard rake over it moving the seed around and down into the ground.. It will need watering, but since its damp in the area, don't water to much or it will turn to mud again. Keep the straw on it for a while till you see grass growing above it, then rake it in a pile and use it in the area often when it rains hard.. Good luck, Hope this helps. :)

You can purchase grass seed that grows in shaded areas and it works very well. BUT, if you are getting the puppy in 11 days the grass is not going to have time to grow and have a strong enough root system to allow the dog to run on it. The dog will be going potty too and that won't help the grass grow.

You need to clean up the leaves and mud anyway. It will dry out if you work on it. It would be a nice place for the pup. You still need to walk him at least twice daily and play with him. The fenced in area is not supposed to be his baby sitter.

You can grow grass in a shaded area. I did it. You must buy kentucky 31 fescue grass seed. This stuff is awesome. I also had terrible soil...hard, acidic and tons of trees around that would soak up all of the water. Just use the seed and if you have hard soil, you have to get a aerator i think it is called. basically it is a large wheel with spikes in it that you attach to a riding mower and it pokes holes in the ground to aerate it. You could also do it by had since you have a small are to do. But you must clean out the leaves and keep the dogs off until it starts to sprout. Cover the seeds with hay and keep it moist. Then watch it grow!!!!

Grass will grow in a shaded place just fine. Get rid of the leaves or just dig them in with the soil and look for a strong type of grass. One thing though, the puppy will most likely ruin the bit of lawn. Good luck.
