Im an Australian considering traveling to America at the end of the year in the university break. Im just after some opinions as to whether backpacking from say Los Angeles to New York is a good idea. Do Americans like Australians? Would it be safe? How long would it take? Just general advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Thank you

This is good, i really know very alittle about the geography of America but ill probably begin in Los Angeles as it's the cheapest to fly to from Australia. I'm just so curious about seeing the country which has so much influence in the world, i mean apart from sport pretty much all fashion and television in Aus is derived from American culture.

We love Australians!

I haven't heard of backpacking around America as a feasible option - our country is so vast, with poor transportation options to get you from one coast to the other. I'd select a state and explore it or rent a car and explore a few states on either coast.

I live in the Midwest so I hate to encourage you to skip the Midwest but there's really a lot more to do in a smaller expanse on the East coast. Best wishes and have a great trip!

I can't speak for all Americans, but I have no problem with Australians. I think most Americans like Australians.

That kind of hike would take a *long* time, however. I know hiking the Appalachian Trail (from Maine to Georgia) is gorgeous, having hiked some of it myself, and completing the whole trip is said to take from 5-7 months on average. The trail is generally safe and in good condition... you shouldn't have to worry about being attacked by native wildlife (maybe a bear or two.) Hiking across the entire country is probably not such a good idea, however, especially if you're not a pro hiker with a year or two off.

From New York City to LA is 2790 miles, or 4500 kilometers.
Could you backpack that in a summer?

I'd suggest hiking the Appalachian trail instead...it runs north to south, and the USA is shorter that way. You could also do some great short trails in the Rocky Mountains, or follow the Mississippi river from north to south.
I think you'd be safe...there's weirdos everywhere, but normal precautions should suffice.
And, yes--we like Aussies, and everyone else too, unless they are here under nefarious pretenses!!
Stop in Wisconsin for some of our wonderful cheese & beer!

I think it's a great idea, but you have to make sure to be safe. Try not to do it alone if it can be helped and make sure to check in with your friends or family on a regular basis. America is a beautiful country and you will fall in love with it. Have fun!!!

Americans are suckers for accents...You won't have any problems. Why start in L.A.? What do you want to see? Will you be hitch hiking? Riding the bus? Staying at Hostels? Think this one through and plan according to what you want to see while here
