I moved into a rental home 1 mo ago. I told landlord about bad staircase. It is unsafe not to code etc. She ignored it. I then cut the back of my leg on a nail sticking out on steps of stairs. I went to dr and had an infection and had to get a tetnus shot. An attny. advised me to ask landord for her insurance info so I could contact them. She says she doesnt have any. I dont believe it cuz she owns several homes. I told her I would contact the county code people, and she is very upset. How do I go about pursueing this now, not large enough to obtain an attorney.

She should have liability insurance that would pay for your health costs. If she doesn't, she is not particularly wise. Anyone with several rentals would be considered to have somewhat "deep pockets" meaning that if someone hurt himself or herself she could be sued and lose everything. If she doesn't want you to call the code people, document your out of pocket medical expenses and ask if you can deduct it from next month's rent. Also, ask when she is going to have the stairs fixed. If she has no plans to do so, I would think seriously about moving out (and then contacting the code people--someone could be seriously hurt).

A person does not need insurance to be sued. You are suing the person, not the insurance company. Tell the landlord to pay your bills or you will sue. You don't need a lawyer for the amount you want. Use small claims court.

Small claims court sounds like your best option. You need no lawyer, it's more like Judge Mathis. You take your evidence and speak plainly about the case.
