I would recommend an HP! Good support and ease of restoration!

Probably an HP or a Dell Inspiron. Since your mainly doing e-mail, I would get the cheapest processor (the one's today are still good though), 512 MB of RAM (1024 MB of RAM if you're going to use Vista), 100 GB hard drive, 128 MB video card, 14 to 15.4 inch widescreen LCD display.

Dell is a good all round brand and they have some cool deals. They have good customer support as well.

Apple MacBook or Mini. Service and support is top-notch. Comes bundled with everything you need. Strongly recommend.

I have my own 17 inch computer
You can save a lot in there too
because it has lots of storage space
