I and my boyfriend LOVE the Smiths and we are 9 years apart in age!
My favourites are:

How Soon Is Now? (This is a classic that you're sure to recognise)
Boy with a Thorn In His Side
This Charming Man (you may well also recognise this one)
Give them a try. If you listen to the lyrics, yes, some of them are depressing but some are really funny and clever too! But on the whole I find the melodies quite jingley-jangley cheerful and happy, and I put the Smiths on when I'm in a good mood!

The Smiths aren't for everyone. i was so into them in the 80's growing up as a "depressed" teen. It was good music for that. It still is good music in my opinion, just lots of people can't stand them. Morrisey has a very unique writing style that just, well, doesn't appeal to all types.
