his favorite lie was about a boy named peter who had a pet peacock with a ten foot tail. peter wore a golden robe that glittered so brightly that when he walked through th sun flowers they turned away from the sun to face him. when peter was ready to sleep the peacock spread his magnificent tail enfolding the boy gently like a closing go-to-sleep flower burying him in the gloriously iridescent rustling vortex.

If this if from "The Scarlet Ibis", lies in this stort story are tall tales, not stories intended to decieve. Doodle probably has an active imagination because he is an invalid and that his mind has nothing to do but imagne all day. The Peter in this lie probably refers to Doodle because he wants to be normal or even have wonderful powers. Or it can be a reflection upon his brother as this is how Doodle imagines him.
If you had also posted the title "The Scarlet Ibis" or the author James Hurst you may have gotten more answers that refer to what you are asking for.

The author is just trying to talk about his imagination of the boy being save in the arms of someone when he's sleeping in the night. The real context cannot be explained with just the small bit of paragraph that you have given.

Who's lying to who here?!?

All I can see is a beautiful imaginative little story!

What's wrong with that I wonder?

Are you looking for a hidden meaning?

Yeah I guess you could say that Peter might be suffering from a slight case of narcissism in a way...

Not that there is anything wrong with that, I might add.

Good luck with your hopeless quest!

A lie? That's not a lie! He's a genius! His imagination is very broad! I envy him.

I think it means that "he" has a very active imagination... but why do you refer to it as a lie? It's a rather unique and creative story... does "he" insist that it is true?

This is a fantasy, not a lie. As to why "he" thought it was a lie and his favorite one, one would have to know more about "him."
