In my opinion it would need education. First of all to teach the horrors of the holoaust than to teach respect to humanity,
not to encourage or discriminate against minorities, people of different religion, gender race etc. Explain what democracy means, how to prevent rise of tyrnay, avoid voting for a "strong man" as a leader.

God has reasons. Or maybe not. Life is senseless. So many things have no rhyme or reason to them. Maybe it has a purpose. Certainly it is hard to comprehend how something like the Holocaust happened. I think of God as creating the world, dumping us in, and then letting us lead from there. He gave us free choice, after all. Sure, He can hope that we do the right thing. But if He were to say, "STOP!!! THAT"S WRONG!! Don't do THAT!!", it sort of defeats the whole purpose of free choice. Everyone makes their own decisions. Sometimes horrible things happen as a result of free choice. But sometimes beautiful things can occur as well. I think that genocides and massacres and the like hurt God just like it hurts us when we hear about it on the evening news, except more so, because we are like God's children (and I'm talking all of humanity, not just the Jews). I don't understand how the Holocaust could have happened. I honestly don't. But then, who can? Maybe it was a warning of what can happen when we let hate go too far. In that case, we're doing a pretty lousy job picking up on the hints (Bosnia, Rwanda, Cambodia, Darfur, etc.) Somehow, everything will turn out ok. That's all we can do. Just hope.

1) We need stable democracies and legal systems that make sure that criminals like the Nazis can't come to power.

2) People have to learn not to be racist and to be immune to any such ideology that tells them there were "subhumans" or whatever word they might use.

The first point is given now in the West I think. I can't imagine that any Werstern country could be turned into a dictatorship again. I don't believe that people would accept it. In Germany in the Weimar Republic people lacked faith in their new democracy and this democracy didn't work well, it also had legal faults that made it possible for Hitler to become a dictator.

The second point is something that is still not as I would wish it to be, but I think that the condition is much better now than it was at the time of the Nazis and before. In the Weimar Republic, a party could simply make it one of their main ideas that they fiercly hated Jews and blamed them for everything, and could be a popular party with that. It is always incredible for me to see what kind of ideas were totally representable in German society at that time. And although nowadays there is still racism and antisemitism I don't see it on such a scale as it was then and it doesn't get such an acceptance now. And although many people hate Muslims now, this hatred never goes to such extremes as the way Nazis hated the Jews.

So any other genocide committed by a Western country is something I can't imagine that it could happen. On the other hand in other parts of the world genocides still do happen, although on a smaller scale than the Holocaust. To stop this I think it would require the same as I wrote above and it is not achieved yet in many countries of the world.
It would also be necessary to interfere when a genocide happens, like in Rwanda and now in Darfur it would be the responsibility of America and Europe to interfere to stop it. The problem here is that many think it is just not there business what happens somewhere in Africa.

A woman named Eva Brewster was a survivor of the holocaust and wrote an awesome book about her life and all she endured. The title is "Progeny of Light/Vanished in Darkness. She has since passed away but her daughter is continuing her work by telling her mothers story in schools and a display has been set up in the Lethbridge Alberta Canada museum. This way people will realize that it DID indeed happen and we all have to make sure that it never happens again. If you can get the book please read it. It affected me more than anything I've ever read

It begins in stages ..first promises of grandeur..then when the people are mesmerized , bring in the storm troopers ..silence your adversaries.. get rid of the crosses on churches ..tax to the hilt and forbid all progress until all hope is lost..as well as your right to democracy ..Don't look now - but the liberals are coming . They've given us enough hints ..
Stop tyranny , vote Republican ..

I think it will take good people speaking up and being willing to suffer for it. Unfortunately, something very much like the holocaust has been going on in Darfur, Sudan for many years.
