Piezo-electric is a term applied to materials, usually crystals, that generate small amounts of electricity when they are mechanically deformed. So, put a rochelle salt crystal in a small tin, mechanically hook it to a diaphragm, electrically hook it to an amplifier and you have a microphone. Also used industrially to measure strain, position movement, related things. The mechanical deformation amount of the crystal is tiny and so it the electrical output. Also the electrical output is due to the change in the deformation, so parking your car on such a crystal will only give an output while the car is moving. After it has come to a complete rest, no output.
