When you increase RAM, you will notice a significant difference in your multi-tasking capability. You'll be able to do more things at once and probably faster too.

The computer RAM is where your computer does all it's immediate 'thinking'. When you have the minimum amount of RAM, then you computer has to keep swapping some of it's thinking ideas up to the hard drive to make room for another 'process' (or thought) on the little RAM space. This 'swapping' takes more time so it's a lil slower. When one adds more RAM, it;s like giving your computer a bigger brain or bigger thinking area. So it doesn't have to move some of it's thoughts to the Hard Drive. It can do all it's thinking in the RAM, thus making it work more efficiently and more rapidly.
So the more RAM you have, the faster your computer can process stuff. My suggestion is to anyone that can afford it, ...MAX out that puppy! Just make sure you know where to stop. Get the specs out and see what the max is on your computer and MAX it!
Think of your RAM as a notepad and the Hard Drive as a file cabinet. The bigger your notepad, the more stuff you can do without consulting your file cabinet.

Well what it does really depends on what you are doing with your computer. An operating system can use either RAM or the disk for most operations, but RAM is MUCH faster so you want to have enough RAM to load whatever you are doing into RAM (RAM is fast but forgets information when the power is turned off so that information has to be loaded from the disk). Once you have enough RAM for everything you are working on to be loaded in RAM, adding more RAM does nothing. But until that point adding RAM is one of the best ways to speed things up.

Increasing the RAM will allow you to do more things at one time and will increase the speed at which things will get done within your windows programs. The more RAM the better off you will be. If you have the space and the money get all you can get.

OK, RAM (Random Access Memory) temporarily stores information, ie, pictures, video, graphics for games, so that the CPU can access it immediately. The more memory you have available the more instructions your CPU can calculate. Increasing your RAM from 256MB to 512MB is recommended for any modern system. For gaming and or Windows Vista 1GB to 2GB of RAM is recommended. Make sure your system supports the upgrade.
In addition to increasing your RAM windows unless otherwise configured, will increase your Virtual Memory (Pagefile), if RAM is full, then information will be stored in a spot on your hard disk to be available to use by the CPU.
