*Any* book by Stephen Jay Gould. (He is a marvelous essayist). But some of my favorites:
- The Flamingo's Smile
- The Panda's Thumb
- The Mismeasure of Man

The Ancestor's Tale, by Richard Dawkins. (Destined to be a classic.)

The Anthropic Cosmological Principle by John D. Barrow, Frank J. Tipler, and John A. Wheeler (A pretty tough read, but I loved it.)

My personal favorites, A Brief History of Time and The Universe in a Nutshell, both by Stephen Hawking. The second one is slightly easier to understand, but they both have similar information.
