Why do the referees whistles have a different tone in football and rugby? A football refs whistle is more shrill than a rugby whistle.

all sports come from different parts of the world, so they are all different

Well they are not different sorry to let you know!

Pro ref's and pro rugby refs all use the same type of whistle, it is called a fox40. It is the highest type of noise whistle, used for large crouds.

Lower down the level, amatuer etc, there are loads of different types of whistle and people chose there own but at the top, it is fox40

fox40's are definently the most popular. I reffered soccer for the last 5 years, and I chose to use the fox40 over evreythung else. Mainly because it was louder and easy to distingush.

I think this is just to make a difference from one sport to another (in terms of having their own thing).
