Perfect example of why I will not upgrade to Vista. It was the same with XP. I waited a couple of years until they got all (well most) of the bugs out of it. It's always been like that. MS slaps software together, pushes it off on the public and then try to fix it with updates. If your sure that in your case it's not a hardware problem your most likely going to have to get it from an update. I say hardware because this is the first I've heard of a driver problem for a CD Rom drive. That driver is so generic that it's unlikely the problem. All I can suggest is to check the connections and reboot.

Hmmmmm. You may have to update the firmware on your CD/DVD Drive. You will have to know what the CD drive make and model is and then google it for the firmware. Usually you can find the latest firmware update on the manufacturers (of the CD/DVD drive), website. Sometimes driverguide.com will also have the update. You may want to try and reinstall your CD/DVD burner software just as an experiment first. ...Are you able to install stuff from a regular CD Disk using that drive?

Unless you have an oddball cdrom drive, windows should auto detect the driver if it is installed correctly. Windows uses atapi drivers for cdroms and most cdrom drives use that as a default driver. I would check to see if any of the cables did not come unplugged. Also you can check the manufacturers website if it is a non-mainstream brand cdrom. Lastly if it is a burner you will need burning software to access the burning features.
Good luck!
