I wasn't sure if it was literature written about African Americans (doesnt necessarily have to be written by an African American) or literature that is written by African Americans. Can anyone clarify this?

African American Literature is literature written by african american to depict the trials and tribulations they have undergone personally or as a society. Though the stories may be fiction the may also be based on a grain of truth from the author's life or society in general.

"African-American literature" refers to literary works written by (not about) African-Americans.

But it often includes literary works written by people of the African diaspora in the Caribbean as well.
