It's so people don't make a mistake and type something in that is not a valid two letter state code. Not everyone knows them.

It takes up less room on the page, and it might be easier to use sometimes. It can be done quicker by pressing the first letter of the state on the keyboard. Then it'll go through every state, with the beginning letter that you're typing.

To make things easier for the customer, the easier the form is to fill out then the more chance the customers will complete it.
