It is very hard to impeach an American president once he's in power. So far, only 2 have ever been considered for impeachment. By contrast, in some countries, some politicians can have their careers ruined in a night if found that they've been doing something bad like sleeping with somebody other than their spouse ...

Typically, presidents are impeached when they do something really bad, like have an affair, or get involved in a major scandal of some sort. Presidents seldom go to trials altogether. They purposely try to avoid it because they don't want to give the sort of image that they're some sort of criminal. I can't remember off the top of my head if a president acutally ever went on trial at all while in power. I suppose he would lose his prestige if guilty though ... I guess it what would happen to him would be based on the magnitude of the crime (which must be bad for a president to be summoned to court).
