If I was to get specific - for full collagen turnover (composition of ligaments/tendons) and "true" healing it will take over a year. In most cases - people feel better before and assume they are healed.

It also depends on which ligament. MCL and LCL will have better access to a blood supply. ACL and PCL are within a joint cavity. Better access to blood supply - better rate of healing.

Also with new collagen formation - they are initially pieced together by polar bonds (weak; easily broken with motion) and then transition to covalent bonds after 6 months (stronger, won't be broken with motion)

Glad ya asked - had to study that for a continuing education course.

To heal soft tissue injuries around a "joint" you need to follow your MD's plan of care. It may take several weeks, and you may have to wear a knee brace for some time after. If you want to avoid surgery and further injuries in the future, listen and do what the "Doc" says, not anyone else. Take care. SW RNP
