My friend has a 5 1/2 mth old lil girl who weighs less than 12 lbs. They recently found a lump on her back and had it checked by a dr. She has scoliosis and has 4 holes in her heart. If meds dont have any effect, they will have to do open heart surgery to repair atleast the larger of the holes, then they claim the other 3 will heal. Afterwards they say she will be very healthy and start gaining weight, be a normal child. Then they will deal with the scoliosis. In the meantime what can I do to try to help ease her mind or atleast give some kind of comfort?

Be there for her when she needs a sympathetic ear or a shoulder to cry on. Keep her spirits up by just being a friend. It will constantly be on her mind, but that doesn't mean she has to focus on it all the time either. I know when my oldest was hospitalized w/pneumonia I really enjoyed visits from friends where we didn't spend all of our time wallowing in my misfortune. Laughter helps!

If she's really busy running around to lots of medical appt's and such with the baby I'm sure she'd appreciate some practical help such as some housecleaning or having some meals prepared so that she doesn't have to worry about all those mundane things and she can concentrate on her baby getting better.

If there is a financial burden you might want to start a fund for the baby's medical needs and ask people to contribute towards it. Maybe some kind of fundraiser, benefit or something of the like.

The heart condition is very routine these days....of course it is scary for the new mom but medical advances have really really come a long way!

Be there for her...let her express her concerns, frustrations and fears. Don't add to them...just empathize!! I am sure this beautiful litlte girl will come out of this healthy and smiling and perfectly healthy. No one wants a baby that has health issues....but luckily we live in a country where there is much medical advancement and opportunities.

Just be a good friend....it's all you really CAN do!

I have a heart murmer and scoloisis which the heart murmer isnt exactly the same. But with scolosis in children that young they will probably give her a brace. So just be a friend thats all you can do be there for her help her through.

I had two curves scoloisis sucks!

hmm..like others said..being there for her..to listen to have to be leaned upon...but don't ever make her feel like she's being pitied...

As for scoliosis, most likely depending on severity, doctors will recommend either bracing or surgery. Have her check out http://www.myscoliosis.net

There's new type of brace which is very easy on kids...

She needs you as a friend right now. Be there to listen to her, do some research on the computer to help her gather facts and information, and spend time with her and the baby.
