strange that I know how much David Beckham earns but not my neighbour. If everybody knew, people wouldn't try to demonstrate their wealth and get into debt.

I would tell you how much I earn, but I feel compelled to keep it secret!thats my point why do I feel this way.You would however be able to estimate the value of my house ,cars ,clothes holidays etc and probably come to a reasonable estimation of my income.

Because its no one elses business. Of course people know what david beckham earns cause he is filthy rich but not every brags about how much they earn or want to be subjected to ridicule for not making enough.

How do they know exactly what David earns? It could be more or less than stated. Peoples salaries are their own personal information. Today's world, so many people know too much about one another, it's scary, we need some secrets to keep away from our neighbours, it's good to keep them guessing.

People hide their income because so many people cheat these days. You find it in all spheres, and people think it is normal now to work jobs on the side on their boss' time, fiddle expenses, or outright steal money like the Iraqi defence minister did (the biggest theft in human history - US $880 million!). You don't really think public servants live on those salaries do you? They call that a base, and they work several businesses on top of that.

I don't mind telling people, i always find it strange its as if they think they're not allowed to tell people what they earn, maybe we just don't want to hear how much more other people are making than us. I'm 20 and on £14500 plus bonus of approx £1000 and get free accountancy training

Why do you want to know this stuff? It's not any business of yours, any more than your private information is anyone elses. More likely, if 'everyone knew' then there would be more competition, with people harassing others because they do not make as much. I find it pathetic that people are so nosy anyway.

Once you know who much people earn, some people change their opinion of how intelligent, etc. that person is. Therefore, most people prefer to keep what they earn to themselves.

Good point, however some people are too ashamed to tell you how much they really earn, and they try to hide this fact by buying stuff they can't even afford.

Quite simply it is none of your business.Just because you ask a question doesn't mean you are entitled to an answer. When someone asks me something that is none of there business I say "And why do you ask?" They never ask me another personal question.
