The Bill of Rights. The framers had to agree to have it so that they could finish the constitution.

The most critical compromise of the Constitutional Convention concerned the method of representative in the Congress, House and Senate. The larger states, in terms of persons living there, wanted voting based on population. The smaller states in population wanted every state to have the same number of votes, regardless of number of persons. As a result, "The Great Compromise" or "Conneticut Plan was used. Under this system, the House is based on population, but in the Senate each state has 2 votes whether its population is as high as California or low as Alaska.

Another important, but lesser compromise involved slavery. Slave states wanted their slaves to count fully for representation and voting. Free states did not want them to count any. The delegates agree to a 3/5 Compromise, which meant that the slaves counted for 60% of the states representation in the House.

The settlement of these issues were crucial to getting the United States to approve the Constitution.

Actually, Slavery was a big compromise, In order to bring the Southern States to the table, Slavery had to be guaranteed for a certain number of years. It was due to expire shortly after the Civil War anyway. So even without the CW, it would have ended anyway.
