The answer is E
The triangle is right angled, with the hypotenuse length L, one side length 100 and the other side length (L-10)
Draw the diagram and you will see this

Using pythagoras' theorem:
L^2 = 100^2 + (L-10)^2
L^2 = 100^2 + L^2 -20L +100
the L^2 's cancel out
0 = 100(100+1) - 20L
20 L = 100 * 101
L = 5 * 101

L = 505 ft

The answer above giving 445 ft is wrong as there is a mistake during the calculation in which -10 x -10 = -100
this is not the case, so the answer of 505 ft is correct

So L is the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose sides are L-10 and 100.

Plug that into the Pythagorean Theorem, and you get a simple equation for L (linear, actually, since the quadratic terms cancel).

Solve it and you're done with the homework problem!!

(The answer is D: 445 = 9900/20)
