The biggest example of symbolism is the red letter "A" that she was forced to wear at all times--it stands for "adultress" but also was a symbol of much shame and guilt to the heroine. Go to the Yahoo home page and type in symbolism in the scarlet letter and see what comes up. Look for a bibliography so that you will have some references to use when writing your paper and to include in the Works Cited page which is usually required. Also watch the movie "The Scarlet Letter" with Demi Moore. It will help you get through the book. Good luck with your paper.

I think the most important symbol in the
Scarlet Letter is what Hester named her daughter. Pearl. Comes from the phrase in the Bible "casting pearls before swine". It shows how she felt about the rest of the people in the town. She never tried to hide Pearl. In fact she did just the opposite - decking her out in beautiful dresses she made and basically casting her "Pearl" before the very swine who condemned her and gossiped about her. Pearl is the most amazing character in the book. She finds the A comforting and has no idea it is a bad thing.

The letter "A", obviously. It stands for adulteress, but, at one point, kind of changes its meaning (in the perception of people, at least), to "Angel", because Heather is such a good and helpful person that people almost forget they're supposed to despise her.

The letter A also appears in the sky at one point, and may or may not be apparent on the Reverend's chest just before he dies. In those cases, it stands for his guilt.

The sky, in general, is a source of much symbolism. think of things like the one ray of light Hester's daughter is standing in when she and her mother go to the forest.

The pillory is another important symbol - look at the events that happen on and around it.

Hope this helps. :)
