Help, I have been looking at machines and it is soooo overwhelming, especially when you are trying to teach yourself to sew (no one to show me) and don't know what all of the terms mean, bobbin , foot etc? Please give me suggestions. I want to quilt and be able to sew through thicker fabric.

There aren't many machines that sell new for under $500 that will stand up to years of use - especially with thick fabrics. Any of the machines in the $400+ range from a major manufacturer will probably do you well. I'm a fan of Vikings, but I've seen some beautiful Singers and Berninas as well. I know of two friends who bought and killed Janomes, so I wouldn't go there.

The good news is that when people outgrow their machines they often sell their old ones. The local paper here has a used Viking Sarah for $100 which would be a steal!! I have one of those in my collection it's a fabulous beginner's machine,

As for learning how to use it, most sewing stores have classes. Sign up for one and they'll teach you everything you need to know.

We got a great machine at walmart for less than $100. It is made by Brother. Lot of features but very simple and good instruction book came with it. Good luck!

Try to find a machine as simple as possible. If you want to go trough heavy fabrics you will need a machine with enough power (watts). Try find one made by an established company like Singer whit in your budget.
