It was written for the movie New York New York in the seventies and was a spine tingling climax to the film sung by Lisa Minnelli. I cried when she sang it because of it's relevance to the whole story. Then Frank Sinatra brought it out , with changed words and had a massive hit with it. But after seeing the fim I felt FS ruined it. Anyone else in agreement ?

Oddly enough, I totally agree with you.
Nice question to ask on the eve of Liza's birthday (tomorrow)

As with all things, too much of it isn't good. It's a good song, but you start to hate it when you listen too much to it. Frank Sinatra make other songs, right? Listen to those as well.
And you really can't get away with it, lots of singers do some horrible stuff equal to that: Will Smith (Miami?) or Lordi (Hard Rock Halleluja)

I only know the Frank Sinatra version, and it brings back great memories for me, so I like it. They always played it before Columbus Clippers baseball games (they were the AAA minor league team for the Yankees). I had such a great time going to the baseball games, I can't help remembering it all whenever I hear that song.

I agree with you, the only thing of note Frank Sinatra ever did was hump that great big fu*king gun across half of spain helped by Sophia Loren.

I like it, but i haven't heard the original version enough to really compare the two.

Reel Big Fish does a pretty good cover of it though.

I don't exactly hate it as it reminds me of the wonderful film.

Loved Liza's rendition...great singer and great actor.

Hi!

ABSOLUTELY!! UTTERLY!! COMPLETELY!!

It is THE most over-rated song EVER!!

It is because of this song that me and my hubby refuse to go to weddings, 21st Birthdays, 18th Birthdays etc. etc.

So predictable!!

Grrrrr, don't get me started!!!
